Elon Musk's Tunnel Company Expands In Sin City With 69 Stops — Coincidence or Playful Planning?

Aside from being the CEO of Twitter, Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk is also the founder of The Boring Company, which aims to revolutionize underground travel.

Here’s the latest update on the company's expansion efforts in Las Vegas.

What Happened: Clark County, Nevada has approved new plans from Boring Company to expand The Boring Company's Vegas Loop, which provides transportation to and from the Las Vegas Convention Center, to 65 miles with a total of 69 stops — a number that makes perfect sense for a company founded by Musk.

Currently, the Loop has five stops altogether. The original expansion plan called for 29 miles and 51 stations.

The newly approved locations could help both residents and tourists quickly reach destinations like Chinatown, Town Square Las Vegas, Harmon Square, Allegiant Stadium and the Las Vegas Boulevard near Harry Reid International Airport. The hope is to eventually extend the Loop to Los Angeles.

Why It’s Important: The Vegas Loop could be among the first big city underground tunnel systems supported by The Boring Company in the U.S.

The Las Vegas Convention Center loop has designs for up to 4,400 passengers per hour. The Vegas Loop has plans for 57,000 passengers per hour. The Boring Company passed one million total passengers recently and has had a one-day peak of 32,000 passengers. During the CES 2022 event, the LVCC Loop was transporting between 15,000 and 17,000 passengers daily.

The Boring Company plans to fund the entire project, which likely helped win approval from the county. The company raised $675 million last year.

According to its website, The Boring Company's "mission" is to "solve traffic, enable rapid point-to-point transportation and transform cities."

While there are no details on how soon the new Vegas Loop will be up and operational for all 69 stops, it could come at a good time for the city, which is starting to regain tourism revenue on the heels of COVID-19.

Last month, the city saw pre-COVID tourism numbers bolstered in part by Taylor Swift concerts, NCAA Basketball and several major conferences.

Las Vegas has also grown as a place for professional sports as the home of the Las Vegas Golden Knights (NHL), Las Vegas Raiders (NFL) and soon to be the new home of the Oakland A’s. The city has also been thrown in the mix for landing a future NBA expansion team.

The Boring Company loops use Tesla vehicles like the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model X. Musk has also said that rides on the loops would be payable with Dogecoin DOGE/USD, his favorite cryptocurrency.

As more stops are added, the project could increase the number of Tesla vehicles needed and the adoption of Dogecoin.

The Boring Company is targeting to have more projects in other states around the U.S. with rumors of testing happening in Texas.

Loops like the one in Las Vegas can also serve as testing grounds for autonomous driving vehicles from Tesla. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has been supportive of the use of autonomous vehicles in the future.
