Trump's Niece Calls His CNN Townhall A 'Tragedy' For American Democracy: 'Cannot Destroy Our Country By Himself ... Requires Allies'

Zinger Key Points
  • Donald Trump's niece slammed CNN for providing a platform for her "authoritarian" uncle a platform to air his biased views.
  • Opinion polls show the former president is leading the rest of the GOP candidates by a wide margin.

Donald Trump took part at a CNN town hall in which he fielded questions from New Hampshire GOP primary voters.

What Happened: Among the notable takeaways from the event was his assertion that the 2020 election was rigged and that he would pardon the Jan. 6 rioters. He took potshots at Florida Governor and potential GOP primary rival Ron DeSantis, while leaving out the other contenders for another day.

Donald Trump also commented on several topics ranging from economics to geopolitics and kept the audience in splits with his humor.

But at least one person was not left impressed.

Not Townhall, A Rally: Mary Trump, the niece of Donald Trump and a critic of him as well as the Republican party branded CNN as "anti-American," in a tweet. Commenting on the event, she said, "I'm furious."

"In less than an hour, they allowed an authoritarian wannabe to lie constantly while an audience full of his followers applauded. This was not a town hall, it was a rally," she added.

The podcaster and psychologist said Donald Trump bragged about overturning Roe v. Wade, claimed that Democrats allowed babies to be murdered after they are born and advocated for the U.S. to default on its debt.

"And he showed, once again, why a jury of his peers found him liable for sexual assault and defamation," the former president's niece said.

Mary Trump also trained her guns at CNN. "But Donald Trump cannot destroy our country by himself. That requires allies."  With the Republican party already in his pocket, he now has CNN also on his side, she said.

Calling Donald Trump accuser Elizabeth Jean Carroll's victory in the sexual abuse lawsuit as a "boon to the rule of law," she said the "CNN fiasco" was a "tragedy for American democracy."

Conservative media outlet Fox News, which once served as Donald Trump's mouthpiece, hasn't been recently providing him with the coverage that would like to have. CNN's embracing of him should provide a shot in the arm for him, especially at a time he has taken a big lead over the rest of the announced and potential contenders in the fray for the 2024 GOP primary race.
