Elon Musk’s latest statement on the growth of artificial intelligence has left the tech world puzzled and amused, as the tech billionaire predicts a future without AI winter — even when he has been vocally protesting against the rapid advancements of AI systems “more powerful” than OpenAI’s GPT-4.
What Happened: On Sunday, Adam D’Angelo, the chief executive of Quora, a social question-and-answer website, took to Twitter and shared his predictions saying that the progress in the field of artificial general intelligence or AGI will continue to grow without any period that feels like a “winter,”
Musk agreed with this prediction and responded to his tweet, saying, “There will be no winter for AI, quite the opposite.”
It is pertinent to mention that Musk has been vocally protesting against the rapid developments in the field of AI. However, his protests have been called “less well-intentioned” by the likes of Reid Hoffman, who questioned why Musk plans to launch his own AI-powered chatbot called “TruthGPT” when he is so against the ones that already exist.
The tech billionaire has previously stated that the only time he met former U.S. President Barack Obama, he didn’t talk about Tesla Inc. TSLA or SpaceX but promoted AI regulations.
Why It’s Important: Musk isn’t the only one who thinks that AI could be the enemy of humanity.
Not only tech experts like Geoffrey Hinton, who recently left Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL subsidiary Google saying that he needed to talk more freely, think that risks posed by AI to humanity might be more pressing than those of climate change, 61% of Americans also believe that artificial intelligence could spell the end of humanity.
In contrast, people like Jaron Lanier, Bill Gates and Jürgen Schmidhuber strongly disagree with the sentiment and think that the right way to move forward is to continue with the development and subsequently assess the issues and bring forward ways to solve these challenges.
