Not Trump Or DeSantis: New Poll Shows Elon Musk Is Most Favorable US Political Figure

Elon Musk is held in higher regard than any politician in the U.S. right now if a recent poll is to be believed.

What Happened: According to a recent Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll in May 2023, the Tesla CEO is regarded more favorably than any politician in the U.S. The poll, conducted by the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard (CAPS) and the Harris Poll and HarrisX, explored the sentiments of registered voters towards influential figures.

The results revealed that 47% of respondents considered Musk the most favorable political figure in the U.S. Not far behind, experienced politicians like Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis received 46% and 45% of the votes, respectively. Bernie Sanders and President Joe Biden secured the fourth and fifth positions with 42% of respondents viewing them favorably.

The survey engaged 2,004 registered voters on May 17 and 18. It also examined public sentiment towards institutions, with Amazon, the U.S. military, and Google being the most favorably viewed. Amazon garnered favor from 78% of respondents, while the U.S. military and Google were viewed favorably by 77% and 75% of respondents, respectively.

Balaji Srinivasan, former Coinbase CTO, shared the poll results on Twitter, noting that Musk is now the most popular political figure in the U.S.

Regarding pressing issues, inflation was considered the most important concern for the country, followed by immigration and national debt, which also gained increased attention this month.

In a prospective GOP primary, Trump remained the clear favorite and continued to gain ground on DeSantis. While some voters and Republicans believed DeSantis could pose a real challenge to Trump, others felt that recent moves by the Florida governor on Ukraine and abortion had backfired, causing him to fade. However, DeSantis’ abortion bill made him more appealing to GOP voters.

In the Democratic primary, Biden emerged as the favorite, consolidating support, with Vice-President Kamala Harris as the runner-up. Nonetheless, many respondents expressed the belief that both Biden and Trump should not run for a second term.

When it comes to the country’s mood, less than a third of voters believe the country is on the “right track,” and two-thirds think the U.S. economy is headed in the wrong direction. Only 21% of voters believe the U.S. will avoid a recession.
