Trump And DeSantis Have A New GOP Challenger: Senator Tim Scott

Zinger Key Points
  • South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott announced his bid for the White House on Monday.
  • Recent polling data shows an uphill battle for Scott, with Trump maintaining a strong base of support.

Sen. Tim Scott launched his bid for presidency Monday, presenting himself as an alternative to former President Donald Trump, who has announced a 2024 candidacy, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is expected to announce he’s running for the White House.

Who is Tim Scott? Growing up in a single-parent household in North Charleston, South Carolina, Scott, 57, experienced frequent relocations. Overcoming academic setbacks during his high school years, he found inspiration in conservative principles through a mentor, leading him to turn his life around, according to his bio at Senate.gov. He earned a degree from Charleston Southern University and established a successful small business.

As a public servant, his path has taken him through Charleston County Council, the South Carolina House of Representatives, the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He's most known for his legislation on Opportunity Zones, enacted as part of the 2017 tax reform package, which has the potential to attract billions of dollars in private investment to distressed communities across the country.

Polling Information: According to recent polling data from FiveThirtyEight, Scott faces an uphill battle.

The surveys, which concluded on May 18, indicate a strong base of support for Trump, with the former president leading the field by significant margins.

In the polls conducted by HarrisX/Harris Poll and the Harvard University Center for American Political Studies, Trump garnered 78% support, while Scott received 22%.

Similarly, Trump secured 65% support compared to DeSantis’ 35% and Pence’s 21% when measured against the other potential contenders.
