Microsoft Corporation’s MSFT co-founder Bill Gates envisions a future where AI agents revolutionize the way users shop and search online, rendering traditional websites like Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN and Alphabet Inc.‘s GOOG GOOGL Google search obsolete.
What Happened: On Monday, during the AI Forward 2023 event in San Francisco, Gates emphasized the criticality of developing the most advanced AI agent, which he believes will disrupt search engines, productivity tools and online shipping platforms, reported Fox Business.
“You’ll never go to a search site again,” he said. “You’ll never go to Amazon.”
The tech luminary also expressed his desire for Microsoft to be a front-running contender in this race but acknowledged the possibility of a startup emerging as the ultimate top player, estimating a 50% chance for that outcome.
Gates also praised Inflection AI, co-founded by Elon Musk’s fellow “PayPal Mafia” member Reid Hoffman, who is also the co-founder of LinkedIn – now owned by Microsoft.
Why It’s Important: Since OpenAI – the company Musk co-founded in 2015 and left in 2018 – released chatGPT for public testing in November last year, Gates has time and again compared the advent of this AI-powered tool with the invention of the internet.
However, Musk previously called Gate’s understanding of AI “limited.”
It was previously reported that Amazon plans to integrate AI or a chatGPT-style product search into its web store. Similarly, Google is also reportedly gearing up to add Bard AI and short video clips to its search results and quash any threats against its search dominance.
Nevertheless, Microsoft started this trend by incorporating OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology into its search engine, Bing.
