Elon Musk’s finds OpenAI’s integration of Microsoft Corporation’s MSFT Bing as the default search engine for chatGPT “interesting.”

What Happened: OpenAI said it would start using Microsoft Bing as the default search engine for chatGPT, starting with chatGPT Plus users and eventually extending to all free chatGPT users through a plug-in.

The move has drawn the attention of Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and left in 2018 due to some agreements. The tech billionaire responded to the news with a simple yet intriguing comment, “Interesting.”

“This is just the start of what we plan to do with our partners in OpenAI to bring the best of Bing to the ChatGPT experience,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said during the company’s Build conference in Seattle on Tuesday.

In a separate blog post, Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s consumer marketing chief, stated that the integration aims to enhance chatGPT’s capabilities by providing more current and relevant answers sourced from the web, allowing citations and a seamless search experience within the AI-powered chatbot.

Why It’s Important: Since chatGPT’s public launch in November last year, critics have pointed out a glaring limitation of the chatbot — the ability to discuss current events

In contrast, Microsoft’s Bing Chat, integrated with the same OpenAI technology, stands apart from chatGPT because it leverages up-to-date information to respond to text-based queries.

Subsequently, considering Microsoft has been trying for years to expand usage of Bing and gain market share from Alphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL Google Search, the latest development might give the search engine a push in the right direction.

It is pertinent to note that Microsoft’s CEO previously dismissed Musk’s accusations about the tech giant controlling OpenAI.
