Newly Engaged Couple Forced Apart On United Airlines Flight, Fiance 'Bumped' From First Class

Zinger Key Points
  • A newly engaged couple were separated on a flight from London Heathrow to Chicago.
  • The move was made to make room for a crew member needing rest.

United Airlines Holdings, Inc UAL has found itself trending on TikTok after moving a paying first-class passenger to coach.

What Happened: Danielle Schwab posted a video to the social media site, while leaving from London Heathrow Airport to Chicago, saying her fiancé had been told to move to a cheaper coach seat to allow a crew member to sit in the more expensive first-class seat for the flight, according to The Street.

“All of a sudden, my fiancé –we just got engaged—my fiancé just got moved to coach,” she said, adding that they “bumped” him so that a “part of the crew could sit in first class instead.”

“I understand that the crew works very hard, however, we booked these seats ahead of time and this is not fair,” Schwab said in the post. The video ends with the voice of a man, presumably Schwab’s fiancé, saying, “I’m so mad.”

The Response: Schwab’s post had received almost 400,000 likes by Thursday afternoon and over 21,000 comments, many of which expressed dismay but also many who offered an explanation. “It was a pilot, and it’s [a] required crew rest area,” wrote Aviator_Jes, adding, “he was probably in seat 1a. Probably an extra pilot on a training flight. You can be compensated.

The publication reached out to United Airlines to ask about the incident and received a response from an airline representative who said: "To provide the required room for crew members to rest during the flight, we had to reassign two customers who were originally ticketed in Polaris to Premier Plus seats instead. We understand this is frustrating for our customers, and we refunded the price difference for the seats and offered each customer a $1,500 certificate for future travel."
