'Safety Over Comfort' As Far As FSD Beta Is Concerned, Says Elon Musk

Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday that the EV giant is prioritizing safety over comfort for its Full-Self Driving (FSD) Beta.

What Happened: As Tesla becomes confident in the safety of FSD Beta, comfort will follow, Musk said. The CEO was responding to Twitter user and popular tech blogger Robert Scoble.

Scoble, who received FSD Beta 11.4.2, said that though Tesla fixed two permanent mistakes on his school route in the new update, it has many more to fix. The number of times he felt terror on shame per drive is going down, the blogger added.

“But to earn our trust it must not terrorize us on any drive,” Scoble, also a former Microsoft employee, wrote.

“I sense Tesla's AI is speeding up as it has fewer mistakes to fix. Will need another update or two to validate my theory,” he added.

Why It Matters: FSD Beta 11.4 started shipping to Tesla employees in early May. v11.4 should arguably be v12.0, Musk had said. However, v12 is reserved for when FSD is end-to-end AI, he added.

Musk also said that the EV giant would roll out a full self-driving free trial sometime in the future once FSD is “super smooth” and not just safe. Even among Tesla owners, awareness of FSD capability is “shockingly low,” he added.

Regarding 11.4.2, Musk said that some easy to fix bugs were addressed in the update. "Will address excess conservatism with narrow roads & with lane changes in heavy traffic," he added.
