Department of Justice Special Counsel Jack Smith disclosed the unsealing of an indictment, charging former President Donald Trump with “felony violations of our national security laws, as well as participating in a conspiracy to obstruct justice,” in a press conference held just moments ago.
Full details of the indictment are covered here.
Smith emphasized the gravity of the situation, inviting “everyone to read it in full. To understand the scope and the gravity of the crimes charged.”
Smith underscored the bedrock principle of adherence to the rule of law saying, “we have one set of laws in this country, and they apply to everyone.”
Despite the serious nature of the charges, Smith maintained that Trump is “presumed innocent until proven guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
His office is pushing for a speedy trial consistent with public interest and the rights of the accused.
