Samsung's Upcoming Flip Phone's Outer Display Might Finally Become More Functional With Customized Google Apps

Alphabet Inc.'s Google GOOGL and Samsung SSNLF have teamed up to specially customize Google apps for the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldable smartphone.

What Happened: Samsung and Google have worked together to optimize Google apps for the outer display of Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, reported SamMobile.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 will launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 at the Galaxy Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea, in late July.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 will sport a larger outer display – it is expected to feature a 3.4-inch screen on the outside. Its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, has a much smaller 1.9-inch screen, rendering it useful for nothing more than just notifications and restricted access to a few apps.

Why It's Important: Specially optimized apps for the potentially larger outer display of the Flip 5 will let users do more with the smartphone without flipping open the larger display on the inside.

This will reduce the number of flips, extend the life of the inner foldable display, and allow users to quickly do tasks like viewing and replying to messages, among other things.

Besides Google apps, Samsung apps will be specially customized for the Flip 5's smaller display. It is unclear whether third-party apps will also support the smaller display in time, but optimized core apps should cover many users' needs.
