Trump's Niece Says His Authoritarianism 'Now Gallops,' Hopes 'Indictments Are The Wall That Stops Him'

Donald Trump's niece Mary Trump, a psychologist, says that, like the former president’s critics, she is equally upset with her authoritarian uncle and his allies in power who refuse to rein him in.

What Happened: These are dangerous times and the events unfolding are “terrifying, unseemly and tawdry,” Mary Trump said in a tweetstorm on Friday. She also vented her frustration at the “allies in the power” who are not acting.

“Seeing these despicable people every day – feeling that allies in power are merely spectating – is draining,” she said.

The real test is whether the country can set itself right, Mary Trump said, adding that the nation has failed repeatedly in doing so over the course of its history.

“Donald’s [Trump] impunity is self-perpetuating, the creeping authoritarianism now gallops and we have to hope that the indictments are the wall that stops him,” the psychologist said.

Mary Trump also tweeted that Democrats haven't yet figured out the support her uncle has among white evangelicals, the white working class, and groups like the Proud Boys. The media's normalization of the former president suggests that his “long history of committing crimes is already baked in,” she added.

“They have learned no lessons since 2016, which endangers all of us,” she said.

Why It's Important: Opinion polls show Donald Trump is leading the Republican presidential primary race despite his indictments and the slew of legal cases piled up against him.

Following an arraignment in a Miami federal court on Tuesday, Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to charges of mishandling classified documents. He is the first U.S. president whom federal criminal charges have been brought against.

He was also indicted by the New York Attorney's office earlier this year on 34 criminal counts for falsifying business records around hush money payments to adult movie star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign.

Besides his indictments, Donald Trump faces an investigation in Georgia for alleged interference in the 2020 election. He is also being investigated for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill riots. Both of these are criminal investigations.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has also brought up a civil case against the Trump Organization, accusing Donald Trump of lying to lenders and insurers about his company's valuation and assets.
