Trump Says US Does Not Have 'Real Elections,' Calls For Paper Ballots: Democrats 'Want To Cheat'

Former President Donald Trump made another bizarre claim in a jab at the U.S. election system during a speech to Michigan Republicans on Sunday.

What Happened: Addressing Oakland County Republicans on Sunday, the former president asserted that he singlehandedly rescued the steel industry in the state by imposing tariffs on foreign aluminum and steel during his tenure, reported The Hill.

He then said that without steel, there would be no country, borders, or even what he called “fake” elections in the U.S.

"And if you don't have steel, you don't have a country, like borders, like elections, got to have real elections," he said.

"We don't really real elections, we have fake elections."

Why It Matters: Trump, who is under DOJ scrutiny for attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, has repeatedly made baseless claims that the last general election was stolen from him. He also reiterated his desire for same-day voting on Election Day, using paper ballots, and implementing voter ID requirements.

Trump accused Democrats of opposing these measures because they want to "cheat."

"They also want no voter ID because they want to cheat," he said, adding, "They don't want to same day voting better one paper ballots. They never want any of that stuff because they want to cheat on elections."
