GeForce RTX 4060: How Nvidia's AI Investments Elevate Gaming Performance

Nvidia Corp's NVDA launch of the GeForce RTX 4060 highlights how the chipmaker's investments in AI have paid dividends to its core business of video games.

Nvidia has said the new processor series will deliver massive performance boosts to games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Microsoft Flight Simulator, courtesy of an AI feature called deep learning super sampling, or DLSS, Bloomberg reports.

With so much hype around Nvidia's chips powering ChatGPT, one often misses that gaming remains a big part of the company's sales, generating billions of dollars a quarter.

CEO Jensen Huang compared the DLSS technology to how AI language models select the next word in a sentence.

DLSS relies on AI to generate frames in a video game, instead of the traditional way, which is more processor intensive.

The team discovered Nvidia's need to develop a single, general model that could function across various games while allowing each to retain unique aesthetics. They spent two years programming the second iteration of DLSS.

A game like Hogwarts Legacy can leverage DLSS to guess the imagery to display, enabling the wizarding school's stone steps and mahogany walls to render much faster, theoretically. Nvidia has said this can more than double or triple performance in some games.

Although it's still far from perfect, dozens of big games have adopted the latest iteration of DLSS to bring significant frame-rate improvements even to lower-end processors such as the GeForce RTX 4060.

Price Action: NVDA shares traded higher by 0.96% at $426.13 on the last check Monday.
