Nintendo To Use Accounts System To 'Smoothly Transition' Switch Users To Next-Gen Console

Zinger Key Points
  • Nintendo plans seamless transition to next console using Nintendo Accounts, leveraging its 290 million user base.
  • Despite declining Switch sales, a successor is not expected until April 2024.

In a recent investors Q&A session, Nintendo Company Ltd's NTDOY President Shuntaro Furukawa announced that Nintendo Accounts would play a vital role in facilitating a smooth transition for users from the Nintendo Switch to the company's upcoming console.

According to IGN, Furukawa stated: "As for the transition from Nintendo Switch to the next generation machine, we want to do as much as possible in order to smoothly transition our customers while utilizing the Nintendo Account."

Furukawa revealed that there are currently over 290 million active Nintendo Accounts across console and mobile platforms. This significant user base provides a strong foundation for Nintendo to build its next-generation infrastructure.

This strategic move aligns Nintendo with industry leaders such as Sony Group Corp. SONY and Microsoft Corp. MSFT, who have successfully transitioned users' PlayStation Network and Xbox Live accounts across three generations of hardware.

Despite a decline in Switch sales, Nintendo maintains that the current console has at least another year of relevance. In May, the company said that a successor to the Switch would not be released until April 2024 at the earliest.

In the last fiscal year, the Switch sold approximately 18 million units, a decrease from the 23 million and 28 million units sold in the preceding two years, respectively.

"Sustaining the Switch’s sales momentum will be difficult in its seventh year," Furukawa said in May. "Our goal of selling 15 million units this fiscal year is a bit of a stretch. But we will do our best to bolster demand going into the holiday season so that we can achieve the goal."
