Former President Donald Trump is considering a return to Twitter, a platform he has been absent from for nearly two and a half years, Axios reports.
What Happened: Trump, who still has nearly 87 million followers on Twitter, has been absent from the platform since his ban following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Despite his reinstatement by Twitter owner Elon Musk last November, Trump has remained on his own platform, Truth Social, where he has around 5 million followers.
As Trump faces felony charges while attempting to reclaim the presidency, insiders believe his return to Twitter will be strategic, potentially used to offset bad news.
Trump’s activity on Truth Social has increased this month, particularly when he preempted the Justice Department’s announcement that he was being charged in a classified documents case, Axios noted.
This move was seen as a classic Trump tactic of getting ahead of bad news to deliver it through his own filter, while also promoting Truth Social.

Why It Matters: Trump’s return to Twitter could have significant implications for Truth Social. According to several reports, Trump’s team has been planning his Twitter comeback for some time.
However, Trump himself has expressed hesitance about returning to Twitter, stating that he sees no reason for it and would rather stick with Truth Social.
Trump’s return to Twitter could potentially hurt Truth Social, as he owns 90% of Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social.
The value of these entities could decline significantly if Trump were to favor Twitter over Truth Social.
Furthermore, a proposed merger between TMTG and the blank-check company Digital World Acquisition Corp. DWAC is currently in limbo due to government investigations into potential money laundering violations, Axios noted.
