The Biden Administration Plans To Combat Cyberthreats In Smart Devices With A New Label

The Biden Administration has revealed the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a new cybersecurity label aimed at bolstering the security of smart devices.

What Happened: Team Biden plans to enhance cybersecurity in the consumer electronics industry by introducing the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark.

This new label, unveiled during a press briefing on Tuesday, has been designed to signify that smart devices meet rigorous security standards outlined in a report by the National Institute of Standards and Technology or NIST, reported The Verge.

Several major industry players, including Amazon.com, Inc. AMZNAlphabet Inc.’s GOOG GOOGL GoogleSamsung SSNLFLogitech, and others, are in support for this initiative.

The administration is scheduled to introduce the new Cyber Trust logo today through a live stream from The White House, from 9:30 AM to 11 AM ET. During this event, they would disclose additional information about the program and announce the companies already pledged their commitment to it.

What Is The Program: The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark has been introduced as a voluntary program scheduled for implementation in 2024, focusing on connected devices commonly found in homes, such as smart refrigerators, microwaves, televisions, and climate control systems. The label’s scope also encompasses “smart fitness trackers,” indicating potential ambitions beyond the smart home market.

With the Cyber Trust label being displayed on product packaging and complemented by a QR code, buyers can verify a device’s certification status and stay updated on its cybersecurity integrity, the report noted.

As the program is voluntary, its success hinges on encouraging companies to differentiate themselves by adhering to high-security standards.
