President Joe Biden‘s nominee to lead the National Security Agency (NSA), Air Force Lieutenant General Timothy Haugh, has expressed concerns about the growing threats posed by artificial intelligence (AI), Bloomberg reports.
Haugh warned the Senate Armed Services Committee about the potential use of AI in election interference and the export of repressive technologies by China.
“As we look at this election cycle, the area that we do have to consider that will be slightly different will be the role of generative AI,” Haugh said.

AI Threats and China’s Role: Haugh also cautioned about China’s potential export of AI technologies used for population control.
“When we think about where China has focused much of their AI, it's about information control. It's about facial recognition, it's about dominating the population,” Haugh stated. He also referred to China as the “most capable competitor” in cyberspace.
Assurances from the NSA: Despite these warnings, Haugh reassured that the NSA would ensure that AI is used in a way that “does not impact the civil liberties of any American.”
He emphasized a methodological approach to data analysis and the importance of maintaining global surveillance capabilities.
