GOP's Biden Impeachment Moves Get Mocked By White House: 'This Time, It'll Work Wonders!'

On Monday, the White House responded to threats from House Republicans of potential impeachment inquiries against President Joe Biden, dismissing such talks as a desperate reaction to the improving economy under Biden’s administration. USA Today reports.

What Happened: The White House’s rebuttal indicates a proactive approach to potential impeachment proceedings that could coincide with the 2024 presidential campaign season.

House Republicans, led by Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), have been hinting at impeachment inquiries into Biden and other administration officials, citing investigations into the business dealings of Biden’s family. However, McCarthy seemed to backtrack on the certainty of an inquiry, stating he “wasn’t announcing it.”

“I simply said that the actions that I'm seeing by this administration − withholding the agencies from being able to work with us, that would rise to the level of an impeachment inquiry,” said McCarthy, according to the report.

House Republicans have not clearly identified criminal wrongdoing from Biden that would be the basis of an impeachment inquiry.

However, they have recently pointed to evidence cited by Rep. Jim Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the Oversight Committee, that Hunter Biden put his then-vice president father on the phone with foreign business associates.

White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said in response to the impeachment talk in a memo that House Republicans are “channeling their frustrated energy” into an urge to impeach.

He said, “We're sure they'll figure that one out. And this time, it'll work wonders! Just like their pursuit of manufactured conspiracy theories about the President for the past four years has.”

Why It Matters: The impeachment talks come amidst a backdrop of internal conflict within the Republican party.

Attempts to impeach Biden were met with opposition from within the party, with GOP strategist Dan Judy calling the move “frankly stupid.”

However, some Republicans are reportedly concerned that escalating tension in the impeachment proceedings against Biden could potentially impact the party's image and strategy ahead of the 2024 elections.
