After Elon Musk Abandons The Twitter Brand, Four Entities File Applications To Scoop It Up

Elon Musk's decision to abandon the Twitter brand and rename the social media company ‘X' could backfire – four entities have now filed trademark applications to scoop up the Twitter name and logo.

What Happened: The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has received four applications seeking the rights to the Twitter name and logo trademarks after Musk rebranded Twitter as ‘X'.

Two of the four applications have been filed for offering social media services, one for blockchain services, and the last one for advertising services.

All four applications have been filed by individuals. It is worth noting that merely filing a trademark application does not mean they will be granted – it is quite likely that X could oppose the filings, especially in the case of the applications for offering social media services.

The trademark filings bear serial numbers 98100526, 98099294, 98098395, and 98098329.

Why It Is Important: The applications for offering social media services will be direct rivals of X (earlier Twitter). Given that the Twitter brand and logo have a strong recall, X CEO Linda Yaccarino might want to oppose the trademark filings.

Musk, on the other hand, has shown his disdain for the Twitter brand – this is even more evident as his staff tried to pull down the Twitter name and bird from the company's San Francisco headquarters. He ran into trouble with both the bird that refused to come down initially and the local authorities.

After all that trouble, Musk also hoisted the new ‘X' brand mark on the top of the company's San Francisco headquarters. The shiny X logo troubled people living near the building due to the bright and pulsating LED light.

The X logo also drew the attention of local authorities, which served a notice to the company for violating building codes and not seeking their permission before hoisting it atop the company's headquarters.
