Hyundai & Kia Recall Over 91,000 Vehicles In US: Report

Korean automakers Hyundai Motor Co HYMTF and Kia Motors Corp KIMTF reportedly disclosed the recall of over 91,000 newer vehicles in the U.S. due to the risk of the oil pumps catching fire.

The companies urged the car owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures pending repairs, reported Reuters.

Hyundai recalled models 2023-2024 Palisade, 2023 Tucson, Sonata, Elantra, and Kona vehicles, and Kia recalled 2023-2024 Seltos and 2023 Soul, Sportage cars.

The report cited the automakers stating that the electronic controllers for the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly may contain damaged electrical components that can cause the pump to overheat. 

The companies plan to notify owners in late September, and dealers are expected to inspect and replace the electric oil pump controller as needed.

Hyundai saw four cases of potentially related thermal events (no accidents or injuries), and Kia noted six such incidents, the report noted.

In April, U.S. Attorney Generals urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall "unsafe" Hyundai and Kia vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2022.
