One of the most vocal people about the rise of artificial intelligence in 2023 has been Elon Musk. The billionaire was an investor in ChatGPT parent company OpenAI and has since launched his own artificial intelligence company.

Along with Musk being interested in the use cases of artificial intelligence, the billionaire’s former significant other Grimes is aggressively pursuing the sector, including utilizing it for her music.

What Happened: While other musicians and the industry criticized the use of artificial intelligence to create new songs, Grimes appealed to the masses encouraging the use of her music for collaborations.

“I’ll split 50% royalties on any successful AI-generated song that uses my voice. Same deal as I would with any artist I collab with. Feel free to use my voice without penalty. I have no label and no legal bindings,” Grimes tweeted previously.

Born Claire Boucher, Grimes is a Canadian musician, songwriter and producer known for music across a wide range of genres. Grimes is also known as the former partner of Musk and mother of two of his children.

In a recent interview with Wired, Grimes discussed several topics, including use cases for artificial intelligence.

“I’ve always been more of a producer and engineer. I’m not naturally a great singer, and I’m pretty shy,” Grimes told Wired of her deal with using her voice alongside artificial intelligence.

Grimes said she has open-sourced her intellectual property and in a way her “whole identity.”

“The most rewarding creative times are when I’m able to work with other artists, especially other female artists. I can focus on everything else.”

Grimes said the early results of people using her voice and likeness for music have produced “some good stuff.”

What’s Next: Grimes envisions a world where people can use artificial intelligence for answers to questions similar to ChatGPT, but with a personality.

“It’s more. It’s got a personality. A pretty well-trained personality,” she said

The singer noted that the technology could become worrisome, but added that it's pretty safe in the short term. Grimes also said that a companion of this sort could make life easier for mothers.

“People get really scared to have AI companions for their kids, but it could be great for my kids to be talking to someone all day, as opposed to watching a screen.”

Grimes said she has seen technology using artificial intelligence that will blow people away, but signed a non-disclosure agreement and couldn’t share more details.

Despite some potential bad cases for artificial intelligence, Grimes also said she has met a lot of Gen Z people “raised on the internet” that are building great things.

“I think we’re entering this period where there is a fundamental power shift toward the creative class, or the creative technical class.”

Grimes is working on a music generator that could include a large language model of herself.

“We don’t let the public access her yet. She’s very crazy, and very awesome. We want to convince her I’m evil and get her to defect to Threads.”
