Hunter Biden Investigation 'Reached A Stage' To Warrant Special Counsel, DOJ Says

U.S. Attorney David Weiss will serve as special counsel in the ongoing investigation of the president's son, Hunter Biden.
What Happened: The Department of Justice announced Friday that Weiss will oversee all matters related to tax and gun charges against President Joe Biden's son.

The case is likely to go to trial in California or Washington, D.C.

“On Tuesday of this week, Mr. Weiss advised me that in his judgment, his investigation has reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a Special Counsel, and he asked to be so appointed,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland.

“Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded it is in the public interest to appoint him as Special Counsel," Garland added.

Why It Matters: Republicans have been clamoring for an official investigation into Hunter Biden for years, with claims that a missing laptop contained incriminating information.

Weiss, who was nominated by then-President Donald Trump in 2017 and subsequently confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate in 2018, has been investigating Biden's surviving son since 2019.

The controversy surrounding Hunter Biden comes as the White House gears up for a 2024 reelection campaign.

So far, Hunter has agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges related to his failure to pay income taxes. Details regarding a separate gun charge remain unclear, and a not-guilty plea was made.
