Donald Trump's Alleged Co-Conspirators Adopt 'Please Don't Put Me In Jail, Put That Other Guy In Jail' Strategy

Former President Donald Trump‘s “co-conspirators” are turning against each other, with some distancing themselves from the alleged plot to overturn the 2020 election results.

What Happened: Several of Trump’s primary associates, including conservative attorney John Eastman, have defended their actions as legal and evidence-based. However, others, such as Rudy Giuliani and Kenneth Chesebro, identified as “co-conspirators” in the recent indictment, are now shifting blame to fellow participants in the alleged coup, Rolling Stone reported.

"It is the ‘please don't put me in jail, put that other guy in jail' strategy that was sure to come up at some point or another," one attorney working in Trump's legal orbit told the publication.

Giuliani and his legal team are particularly critical of Sidney Powell‘s actions during Trump’s post-election efforts. Chesebro, a central figure in Trump’s fake-electors strategy, is also downplaying his role, potentially spreading the blame elsewhere.

Why It Matters: The internal conflicts among Trump’s allies highlight the pressure and potential legal consequences they face. Trump’s legal defense seems to focus on the “advice of counsel” argument, implying that the attorneys followed his instructions. Prosecutors are keen on leveraging these divisions, with sources indicating that the special counsel Jack Smith‘s office intends to exert pressure on the “co-conspirators” mentioned in the Trump indictment.

Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello, has been vocal in distancing his client from Powell’s strategies, emphasizing that Giuliani was not involved in Powell’s “crackpot idea.” Powell has been a significant focus for the special counsel’s office, with some Trump allies providing what they believe to be incriminating evidence against her.

It's "highly probable that several others will be charged," another source told the publication.

"Jack Smith is not slowing down."

Meanwhile, Chesebro’s recent actions have also raised eyebrows, with some speculating that he might be attempting to shift all blame for the fake-electors scheme onto Trump and his loyalists. "These concerns have been shared with the [former] president," a source said.
