Apple Vision Pro Challenger On The Horizon? Leaked Samsung XR Headset Images And Specs Surface

Apple Inc.'s AAPL Vision Pro headset could soon have a competitor from rival Samsung. A new leak has shown off the first images and specifications of the Samsung XR headset prototype.

What Happened: Samsung is reportedly working on its own extended reality (XR) headset to compete with the Apple Vision Pro headset, with the first images of the prototype now out, courtesy of Chinese news portal Vrtuoluo.

The leaked images show the Samsung XR headset with four motion tracking cameras, two RGB infrared cameras positioned similarly to the real position of human eyes, and a depth sensor to take care of hand and environment tracking.

Samsung has also reportedly included microdisplays and pancake lenses to ensure the visor is thin enough. Samsung's own Exynos 2200 chipset powering the headset instead of the Qualcomm XR chipset. It's an interesting choice, given that the Exynos 2200 chipset has been panned for overheating quickly and high power consumption.

On the pricing front, the Samsung XR headset could be priced in the $1,000 to $2,000 range. Although the range is quite wide, it is considerably cheaper than the $3,500 Apple Vision Pro headset.

The Samsung XR headset is expected to launch in 2024, and Android will power it.

Not Samsung's First Rodeo: Samsung is no stranger to virtual reality headsets. It launched its first device, the Samsung Gear VR, back in 2015 in partnership with Oculus VR. It announced a successor in 2017 at just $130, which is about 27 times cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro headset.

With that said, the XR capabilities have since expanded, and the technology has advanced. However, it remains to be seen if Samsung XR significantly undercut the Apple Vision Pro in terms of pricing.
