Tesla CEO Elon Musk Recommends Hardware 3 Amid Delay In Full-Self Driving On Hardware 4

Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk on Sunday recommended hardware 3 over hardware 4 of its full-self driving (FSD) software, citing delay with the latter.

What Happened: Musk said that the FSD software on hardware 4 will lag hardware 3 by at least another six months. The CEO was responding to a user on X.com who voiced their confusion pertaining to purchasing a new Tesla. “A 3 or a Y? An S? Will I be stuck without beta for a long time on hardware 4? Are there some product updates imminent?” the user wrote.

Musk responded that Tesla would focus on getting FSD on hardware 3 working ‘super well’ and providing it internationally, thereby delaying it on hardware 4.

Hardware 3 and 4 refer to computers that help Tesla in its self-driving efforts. It is backed by a suite of self-driving sensors.

Why It Matters: Hardware 4 started to be integrated into new vehicles starting earlier this year. It has more cameras and a new FSD computer.

However, Tesla has yet to roll out the software on the new hardware. Users instead receive a message on their screen that reads, “Full Self Driving (Beta) will be available in an upcoming software release."
