Biden Draws Inspiration From Martin Luther King Jr.'s Economic Equality Message: 'America Is Big Enough For Everyone To Do Well'

On the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington, President Joe Biden emphasized his administration’s commitment to economic equality.

In an op-ed in The Washington Post, Biden reflected on the vision of equality laid out by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and reiterated his administration’s pledge to uphold these principles.

The President challenged the concept of trickle-down economics, which he believes has failed American citizens, particularly the Black population. Along with Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden said that he aims to change the economic trajectory of the country, focusing on growth from the middle out and bottom up.

Biden said that the administration’s economic plan, dubbed “Bidenomics,” has already shown positive effects. Black unemployment has dropped and more Black small businesses have started up than in the last 25 years.

In the past year, the administration has made substantial investments across America, including $69.9 billion in federal contracts awarded to small, disadvantaged businesses. Over $7 billion has been invested in historically Black colleges and universities to prepare students for high-growth industries.

The administration also approved more than $116 billion in student loan debt cancellation for 3.4 million Americans. Furthermore, a new student debt repayment plan has halved the total lifetime payments for Black students and families per dollar borrowed.

Biden emphasized that diversity in government and private-sector leadership is crucial to ensuring that the experiences of all Americans are represented in the economy.

“Let us reject the cramped view that America is a zero-sum game that holds that for one to succeed, another must fail. Let us remember America is big enough for everyone to do well and reach their God-given potential,” concludes Biden.
