Kim Jong Un Calls For Naval Reinforcements To 'Break The Enemy's Will For War' On Heels Of US Trilateral Summit

Kim Jong Un called to bolster North Korea’s naval forces in response to the growing trilateral military cooperation between South Korea, the United States, and Japan.

What Happened: Kim, on North Korea’s Navy Day, visited the North Korean Navy command, state-owned media KCNA reported.

During his trip, Kim oversaw a cruise missile test aboard a naval vessel. He underscored the immediate need for naval development, considering the “enemies’ recent aggressive attempts and character of military actions.”

Kim asserted that the rising security alliance among Seoul, Tokyo, and Washington has turned the waters off the Korean Peninsula into the “most unstable waters with the danger of a nuclear war.”

He stressed the navy’s role in maintaining war readiness to “break the enemy’s will for war in contingency.”

On his visit, Kim also criticized the leaders of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, referring to them as “gang bosses.” This comment seems to be directed at their recent independent summit at Camp David.

Joining Kim on his visit was his daughter Ju-ae, making her first public appearance since May, when she was present at an inspection of the North’s efforts to deploy a military spy satellite.

Why It Matters: Kim's comments came as South Korea and the U.S. recently concluded their annual military drills, which North Korea perceives as a rehearsal for an invasion.

Kim’s call for naval reinforcement comes in the backdrop of his previous emphasis on augmenting North Korea’s weapons production for ‘war preparations.’ Kim also recently examined North Korea’s attack strategies ahead of South Korea-U.S. drills, underlining the rising tension in the region.

Meanwhile, Markus Garlauskas, a former U.S. spy, expressed concerns that Kim might resort to using nuclear weapons if North Korea perceives China as an adversary.
