In an unprecedented move for the global medicinal cannabis market, Clever Leaves Holdings Inc. CLVR CLVRW)) announced it has been granted an International Declaration of Carbon Neutrality by the 100% Carbon Neutral Program. Clever Leaves thus becomes the world’s first known vertically integrated medicinal cannabis company to achieve international certification for carbon neutrality.
The carbon-neutral certification reflects Clever Leaves’ strategic investment in eco-friendly initiatives in an industry often criticized for its intensive carbon footprint. Traditional indoor cannabis cultivation methods can produce up to 5,200 kilograms of CO2 per kilogram of dried flower. In sharp contrast, Clever Leaves generates a mere 16 kilograms of CO2 while producing the same quantity - albeit quality comparability can be debated.
Andres Fajardo, CEO of Clever Leaves, confirmed the company’s commitment, stating, “We feel that there is no better time than now to double down on our commitment to sustainability and are dedicated to mitigating climate change wherever possible.”
The company has established multiple proactive sustainability measures. These include harnessing solar energy, optimizing waste management, and recycling more than half of its waste. Clever Leaves has also spearheaded reforestation projects and has integrated rainwater into its irrigation practices.
“Working together with Clever Leaves and turning them into the first Latin American company with the 100% Carbon Neutral Company certification has been a truly gratifying experience,” said Javier Segura, COO for LATAM of the 100% Carbon Neutral Program.
Through its sustainable practices, Clever Leaves reported a total carbon footprint of 318 tons of CO2 equivalent across all its operations in 2022. It has further neutralized its remaining emissions by acquiring international carbon credits and supporting emission reduction projects, all in compliance with the GHG Protocol standard.
By achieving carbon neutrality, Clever Leaves not only pioneers a sustainable pathway for the emerging medicinal cannabis industry but also underscores the vital role companies play in addressing the existential threats posed by climate change.
