Elon Musk has announced that video and audio calls are coming to X (formerly Twitter) and that they will work without any phone number.
What Happened: Musk confirmed that video and audio calls are coming to X after announcing that the company was working on the feature back in May this year.
"Video & audio calls coming to X: Works on iOS, Android, Mac & PC, No phone number needed, X is the effective global address book," Musk posted on the social media platform.
In July, Andrea Conway, a designer at X, gave us the first glimpse at how this calling interface would look like. Unsurprisingly, it resembles a lot of what a video calling interface is like, with the speaker, mute, video/audio toggle, and end-call buttons.
Musk's announcement comes soon after it was revealed in X's privacy policy update that the company may collect biometric data of its users, in line with the billionaire's vision to make X the "everything app".
The "everything" part of this vision includes "unlimited interactivity", from audio/video, messaging, payments, and more, according to CEO Linda Yaccarino.
"For years, fans and critics alike have pushed Twitter to dream bigger, to innovate faster, and to fulfill our great potential. X will do that and more," Yaccarino said.
Will This Lead To Spam Calls: While Musk did not divulge any other details about the upcoming calling feature on X, Conway did say that there will be privacy settings to prevent random users on X from calling others.
The video and audio calling feature will be available to users across all the platforms – mobile, web, and desktop. It's unclear whether it will require users to subscribe to the premium program, but we should know more when the feature goes live.
