Biden Ad To Kick Off 2023 NFL Season, Says He 'Refused' Job Losses For Millions

Football fans are eagerly awaiting the return of the 2023 National Football League, with games set to begin on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023.

President Joe Biden is also looking forward for the season to kick off, but it could be for a reason other than football.

What Happened: As September arrives, the 2024 election moves one month closer, now just a year away.

Candidates for the 2024 presidential election are ramping up ad spending, and Biden is among the candidates targeting swing states to try and get an edge over his Republican competition.

According to a report from Axios, the Biden campaign plans to air a new advertisement during the first game of the NFL season.

The new ad is said to focus on the president's economic record and is part of a $25 million advertising campaign that will run through December.

Titled “Got to Work,” the ad will first air during the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs Thursday Night Football matchup, which will be broadcast on Comcast Corporation CMCSA units NBC and Peacock.

“They said, ‘millions would lose their jobs,’ and the economy would collapse, but this president refused to let that happen,” a narrator says in the ad.

The Biden campaign commercial will air in states that include Michigan, Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nevada according to sources.

Why It’s Important: The ad seeks to highlight supply chain improvements, lowered inflation and low unemployment rates that have been seen in recent months. The ad comes as Biden has scored poorly on economic topics in recent polls.

As consumers increasingly abandon traditional cable in favor of on-demand streaming, politicians may turn to sports and news programs, which still attract live viewers, as prime spots for campaign ads.

Year after year, the NFL consistently ranks as one of the most-viewed broadcasts in the U.S., with Week 1 games in 2022 averaging 18.5 million viewers per contest. Over 121 million people watched NFL games in the first week of the 2022 NFL season.

Last year’s Thursday Night Football kickoff game was watched by over 25 million people.
