Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) allegedly termed unsuccessful 2022 gubernatorial contender Kari Lake as a “grifter.”
What Happened: The Georgia lawmaker’s alleged comments about Lake were reported by Rolling Stone, citing multiple sources that have had private discussions with Greene.
Known for her support for former President Donald Trump, Greene seemingly questioned Lake's conservative credentials and her ongoing association with the former president after her election defeat in Arizona.
“MTG thinks she’s a scammer and not even a conservative,” one source told the publication, adding that Greene has said that “Lake is a grifter and [is] trying to keep riding Trump’s coattails because she lost [in Arizona], so she’s cozying up on the election-integrity messaging.”
“Kari did come up, and the term ‘grifter’ was used to describe her more than just once,” said another source, adding that Greene “thinks it’s complete nonsense that anyone would think it’s a good idea for Donald Trump to consider [Kari] for VP.”
Why It Matters: Greene has previously been in discussions over the possibility of being Trump’s vice president. Nevertheless, she expressed doubt about her chances last year to the New York Times, stating, “the last person that the [Republican National Committee] or the national party wants is me as his running mate.”
The revelation of private comments allegedly made by Greene further inflames an already heated rivalry between the two women. The tension between them was palpable during Trump’s speech at Mar-a-Lago, where Greene’s demeanor reportedly turned icy following enthusiastic support for Lake.
In previous reports, Greene confirmed her place on Trump’s VP shortlist but emphasized her primary commitment remains to her constituents.
