Tesla Makes Referral Program Less Rewarding For Model S/X Buyers, Referrers

Tesla Inc TSLA has changed the terms of its referral program to make it uniform across models and less rewarding for Model S/X buyers and referrers.

What Happened: A Model S/X buyer purchasing a new vehicle with a referral will now get a discount of $500 instead of $1000 in addition to three months of full self-driving (FSD) capability. The referrer, meanwhile, will get 10,000 credits instead of the previous 20,000 credits.

These updates make the referral benefits of the Tesla S and X on par with the Tesla Model 3 and Y. All Tesla vehicle buyers will now get a discount of $500 on purchasing a new vehicle with a referral code while all referrers will get 10,000 credits.

The credits referrers accumulate can be used to purchase various Tesla referral awards within the Tesla app. However, these credits cannot be redeemed for cash value.

The change was first flagged by Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt on X.

Why It Matters: Last week, Tesla cut prices of its Model S and X vehicles in the U.S. with cuts ranging from 15.3% to 18.8%. After the price cut, the Model X is now also eligible for the government’s EV tax credit of $7,500.
