The X account of Ethereum ETH/USD founder, Vitalik Buterin, was hacked, leading to a theft of over $690,000 from users who were lured into clicking a deceptive link.

What Happened: As per a report by Decrypt, the breach happened on Saturday. A post surfaced on Buterin’s feed promoting non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from software provider Consensys, which turned out to be a scam link. This link, potentially displayed to his 4.9 million followers, asked victims to connect their wallets to mint the NFT. Instead, the hacker gained access to their funds.

Dmitriy “Dima” Buterin, Vitalik’s father, was the first to publicly acknowledge the hack. The post has been removed since, but not before several victims reported losing access to their wallets’ funds. According to blockchain investigator @ZachXBT, the hacker initially made away with over $147,000, which later surged to $691,000.

Buterin has not yet commented on the incident. The exact number of users duped by this hack remains unclear.

Why It Matters: Last week a research paper by Buterin proposed enhancing trustworthiness and transparency in the cryptocurrency market. Despite proposing measures to weed out malicious crypto traders, Buterin’s own X, formerly Twitter, account fell prey to a security breach.
