Two More 9/11 Victims Identified After 22 Years Thanks To Breakthrough DNA Analysis

In a breakthrough development, authorities have uncovered the identities of two more victims of the 9/11 attacks, two decades post the tragic event, utilizing sophisticated DNA analysis, France 24 reported.

What Happened:  DNA analysis facilitated the identification of a man and a woman who died in the World Trade Center collapse.

Their identities remain confidential, respecting their families’ wishes. This discovery pushes the total count of identified victims to 1,649 out of the 2,753 who lost their lives in the Twin Towers.

New York City’s mayor Eric Adams and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) expressed hope that these new identifications might bring some solace to the victims’ families.

The city remains committed to identifying all victims and reuniting them with their families. However, the process is slow, with 1,104 victims still unidentified.

The latest identifications were made possible by next-generation sequencing technology, a more efficient and sensitive method than traditional DNA techniques. The victims’ remains had been found years earlier.

Why It Matters: The 9/11 attacks left an indelible mark on America where around 2,977 people lost their across New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

This included 2,753 individuals at the Twin Towers, 184 people at the Pentagon, and 40 people in Pennsylvania where one of the four flights crash-landed.
