Electronic Arts Inc EA has confirmed that "The Sims 5," codenamed Project Rene, will be available as a free download when it's ready for release.

"This means that when Project Rene is ready and fully open to players, you will be able to join, play, and explore it without a subscription, core game purchase or energy mechanics," EA said in a blog post.

EA also announced that "The Sims 5" will coexist alongside "The Sims 4," with ongoing support and new content for both games.

While Project Rene won't initially offer all the features of "The Sims 4," EA plans to gradually introduce new experiences and content over time.

They will continue to sell DLC, but "but we plan to change this up a bit," the company stated. Some core features like basic weather may be added for free, while paid packs may focus on specific themes, such as winter sports.

"It’s important that with Project Rene we lower barriers to play and give all players the broadest shared systems because that feels like the strongest foundation for us to grow from," EA added.

The release date for "The Sims 5" has not been announced yet, as it is still in the early stages of development.
