Who's Going To Be Next Jets Quarterback? Here's What Betting Odds Say

The New York Jets entered the 2023 NFL season with as much hype, if not more, than any other team in the league. Between the team’s strong defensive play last year, an explosive run game and bringing in future Hall-of-fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, fans had a myriad of reasons to be excited.

But, less than five plays into the team’s first offensive drive of the season on Monday Night Football, that excitement was replaced by worry and anxiety as Rodgers was carted off the field with an ankle injury. Then, the worst fears of fans were confirmed: Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon and will be out for the season.

Zach Wilson, the third-year quarterback out of BYU, filled in for Rodgers and was able to lead the Jets to victory on Monday night against the Bills, but not without turning the ball over with an interception that reminded Jets fans why the team sought to replace him in the first place.

Jets head coach, Robert Saleh, said that the team will be sticking with Wilson going forward, but oddsmakers aren’t so sure. Adam Thompson an oddsmaker with Bookie.com, released betting odds on who the Jets starting quarterback will be by NFL’s Week 9, which comes just days after the trade deadline. 

Thompson’s favorite is Wilson at +300 with an implied probability of 25%. Wilson should be able to remain the Jets quarterback in the interim as long as he is able to play at a competent level. But, if Wilson shows his inexperience, the team may seek out other options.

Next on the list is Joe Flacco at +475. Flacco played for the Jets last season, and started a few weeks after Wilson suffered an injury, but finished the year as the team’s third-string quarterback behind Mike White. Flacco is currently 38 years old and an NFL free agent, making him a good candidate for a one-year contract. 

Carson Wentz, Jameis Winston, Trey Lance, Kyler Murray and Drew Lock all follow Flacco on Thompson’s list. Wentz is currently a free agent, but the other quarterbacks are with NFL teams, so the Jets would need to negotiate a trade for them. 

Thompson’s biggest longshot? Tom Brady at +5000. Brady came back and played last year for the Buccaneers after briefly retiring in the off-season. At 46 years old, it's unlikely that the Jets would be able to convince Brady to return to the gridiron.
