Xi Jinping's Security Crusade Empowers Ordinary Citizens To Uncover Foreign Spies

The Chinese government is encouraging its citizens, particularly university students, to actively participate in identifying foreign spies, amidst escalating tensions with the U.S., Bloomberg reported.

Universities in Beijing, including the government-run Tsinghua University and the Beijing University of Technology, have initiated campaigns promoting national security and spy detection.

Students at Beihang University, an aeronautics institute currently under U.S. sanctions, were instructed to participate in an interactive training game titled “Who’s The Spy?”

This new security drive comes as China’s President Xi Jinping continues to strengthen security controls to combat foreign threats against the ruling Communist Party.

The campaign was initiated following a National Security Council meeting chaired by Xi in May, emphasizing the importance of “extreme-case scenario” thinking and launching a new anti-spy law.

The nation’s spy agency, the Ministry of State Security, has also been actively promoting its efforts on social media, encouraging public participation in securing national security.

This comes in the wake of C.I.A. director William Burns’ claim in July that the agency had made progress in rebuilding its spy network in China.

While the new security measures aim to protect the Communist Party’s future, critics argue that it could generate damaging consequences, including false reporting and growing suspicion towards foreigners.
