Veteran GOP Strategist Warns Republican Risks Self-Inflicted Damage In 2024 Race With Shutdown: 'Going To Shoot Themselves In The Foot'

Veteran Republican strategist Karl Rove warned House Republicans as the specter of a government shutdown looms large this fall.

What Happened: Rove, during a Fox News interview, cautioned that a government shutdown triggered by House Republicans could potentially damage their interests and negatively affect their position in the run-up to the 2024 election.

“Republicans are going to shoot themselves in the foot in the run-up to the 2024 election if they continue to think that shutdowns are a great way to put themselves in front of the American people,” Rove said.

Even though a debt ceiling deal was struck earlier this year, some House Republicans, unsatisfied with the deal, are calling for additional budget cuts. Their ability to negotiate, however, is hindered due to the Democratic majority in the Senate and President Joe Biden in the White House.

Why It Matters: According to reports, several significant segments of the House Republican Conference reached a preliminary accord on Sunday to avert the Oct.1 shutdown.

The agreement, designed to extend government funding until Oct. 31 while incorporating reductions in domestic spending, is anticipated to facilitate the passage of a defense spending bill this week, NBC News reported, citing multiple GOP sources familiar with the agreement.

Internal strife within the GOP is causing chaos and dysfunction, impacting the government’s capacity to solve problems for the American people. This has set the stage for Democrats to hold Republicans responsible for a potential shutdown.

Historically, Republicans have been blamed for government shutdowns, a fact acknowledged by Rove. With the House Republicans struggling to pass rule votes connected to appropriations, this situation could escalate and pose a significant threat to the GOP’s political standing.
