GOP Governors Hit Back At Trump For Criticizing Abortion Restrictions: 'Never A Terrible Thing To Protect Innocent Life'

Republican governors including Ron DeSantis, Kim Reynolds and Brian Kemp who passed abortion bans are criticizing Donald Trump for referring to Florida’s six-week abortion ban as a “terrible thing,” Politico reported.

Iowa Governor Reynolds responded to Trump’s comments on Tuesday, stating, “It's never a ‘terrible thing' to protect innocent life”.

She expressed her pride in the fetal heartbeat bill she signed in 2018 and earlier this year.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing their focus on restricting access to abortion.

Trump, who is leading the Republican primary race, appears to be carefully navigating the issue. While he contributed to a conservative Supreme Court majority that restricted abortion rights, he seems hesitant to lean further right on the matter.

In an interview with NBC's Kristen Welker that aired Sunday on "Meet the Press", Trump referred to the six-week abortion ban DeSantis signed in April as a “terrible thing and a terrible mistake”. DeSantis, in response, stood firm on his decision, which remains under litigation in state courts.

Trump defended his record on abortion on Tuesday, stating on social media, "I was able to do something that nobody thought was possible, end Roe v. Wade".

However, he warned conservatives about the importance of discussing abortion carefully in an election setting.
