The Biden administration has pledged additional military aid of up to $325 million to Ukraine, in an effort to support the country amidst its ongoing tensions with Russia, The Hill reported.
What Happened: The U.S. administration has proposed a package to cater to Ukraine’s “critical security and defense needs.” Following a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key U.S. figures including President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the announcement was made.
The aid includes military equipment such as missiles and machine guns, aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense against Russia. Zelenskyy was in Washington, D.C., extending his thanks to the U.S. Congress and the American people for their staunch support.
The announcement has come amid disagreements over Ukraine aid and funding bills in the House. McCarthy, who appeared hesitant about providing aid to Ukraine, declined Zelensky’s request to address a joint session of Congress due to time constraints.
Why It Matters: The latest aid announcement is not a standalone move. It follows a series of support packages pledged by the US to aid Ukraine’s defense. In January, the Biden administration provided a $2 billion package, including long-range rockets and other munitions, after Ukraine warned of a new offensive strategy by Russia. Similarly, in March, the U.S. reportedly provided another $400 million military aid package for Ukraine, primarily consisting of ammunition, amid Putin’s intensifying attack in Bakhmut.
