House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has promised to remove Ukraine assistance from the Pentagon’s budget bill following a vote against it by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
What Happened: McCarthy intends to retract the $300 million slated for Ukraine in the Pentagon appropriations bill. This comes after the bill was blocked by certain GOP members on Thursday, The Hill reported.
The Speaker’s announcement followed a procedural vote on the appropriations bill, which was opposed by five conservatives, including Greene, stalling the bill’s progress for the second time within a week.
"It would be out and voted on by itself," McCarthy said, responding to a question about the Ukraine aid in the Pentagon appropriations bill.
This occurred on the same day as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy‘s meeting with lawmakers in the Capitol. The stalled Pentagon bill contained $300 million in aid for Ukraine, intended to bolster a variety of military and national security initiatives.
Following the news, Greene, a strong McCarthy ally, expressed disappointment over the delay in executing this action.
"I've made it loud and clear that I would not vote for a single penny of Ukraine funding,” Greene told the publication.
"Our defense appropriations bill should never be going to fund a proxy war with Russia in Ukraine, so this is a victory for common sense," she said, adding, "I'm proud to have made it happen."
Why It Matters: The rule vote’s failure was a significant blow for McCarthy, who has been working diligently to advance the appropriations process before the impending shutdown at the end of this month. In the absence of a clear path forward in Republican negotiations, a federal shutdown slated for Sept. 30 now looms.
The proposal to consider the House Republicans’ defense spending bill failed with a vote of 216 to 212, marking the second time this week that the motion had failed.
