Ukraine's First Lady Uncertain About Zelenskyy's Second Term As President Amid Ongoing War: 'Depend Whether Our Society Would Need Him As President'

The First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, has expressed uncertainty about her husband, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, running for a second term in 2024 amid the ongoing Russian invasion. This statement was made during an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Business Insider reported

Zelenska stated that her support for her husband’s political ambitions has been inconsistent. However, she appeared less reluctant about a potential second term, citing their experience in office.

She further stated her uncertainty about Zelenskyy’s intent to run given the uncertain state of elections in war-torn Ukraine.

“It will also depend (on) whether our society would need him as a president,” Zelenska said.

With a significant portion of Ukraine under Russian control and the displacement of millions due to the war, conducting a democratic election would be “virtually impossible” and “ill-advised,” according to Ukrainian officials and election experts.

Despite the challenging circumstances, some U.S. officials have been advocating for Ukraine to proceed with its presidential elections as planned in March 2024. However, the Biden administration has clarified that it is not pressuring Ukraine to hold an election.
