Matt Gaetz Says Ready For Short-Term US Government Shutdown Amid Budget Disputes: 'Better Than Continuing On Current Path'

GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, has expressed readiness for a brief U.S. government shutdown in order to push for conservative border policies in the federal budget, Bloomberg reported.

According to Gaetz stated on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures while shutting down certain departments for a few days might not be the best scenario, it is a better option.

“I think it's better than continuing on the current path we are to America's financial ruin," he said.

House Republicans are planning to vote on four appropriations bills this week, even though Congress is likely to miss its end-of-the-month budget deadline. In the meantime, Republicans are contemplating a stopgap measure to fund the U.S. government for 14 to 60 days.

Rep. Jim Jordan noted that while everyone wants to finalize the 12 appropriation bills, it wouldn’t be possible in the next six days. Therefore, a stopgap measure is inevitable, but Republicans would need to achieve a win through this resolution.

Meanwhile, Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have criticized Republicans for causing a “civil war” of infighting among House factions. President Joe Biden has urged Republicans to finalize the budget during a speech at a Congressional Black Caucus event.

These conservative hardliners have put House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in a tough spot, as he tries to satisfy both the far-right and moderate members of the House with a minimal Republican majority.

Another Republican, Rep. Tim Burchett, stated he might support McCarthy’s removal as speaker if he approved a budget deal dependent on Democratic votes.
