Joe Biden's UAW Picket Line Visit Not Prompted By Donald Trump's Plan, Says White House

President Joe Biden‘s upcoming visit to the United Auto Workers’ (UAW) picket line in Detroit, Michigan, isn’t a response to former President Donald Trump’s planned visit, according to the White House, CNBC reported.

White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, dispelled any assumptions that Biden’s decision was influenced by his predecessor’s plans.

“This decision to visit the picket line was based on his own desire. This is what the president wanted — to stand with autoworkers. That's what you're going to see the president do tomorrow,” she said.

Jean-Pierre also revealed that the visit was scheduled upon an invitation from UAW President Shawn Fain, although she refrained from discussing the ongoing negotiations between the union and automakers.

The UAW, a union that represents nearly 146,000 workers across major automakers such as Ford FGeneral Motors GM, and Stellantis STLA, historically leans towards Democrats and even endorsed Biden in 2020. However, they have yet to endorse the president for reelection.

The UAW strike, which began on Friday, has since expanded to 38 parts and distribution locations across 20 states, primarily targeting GM and Stellantis. Meanwhile, Ford Motor seems to be off the hook as the company has shown seriousness in reaching a deal, as per union president Fain.

In contrast, Trump announced last week that he would skip the second GOP debate in California to speak with striking UAW members.
