Tesla Inc. TSLA has removed the option to redeem referral points for factory tours at its Giga Texas or Fremont Factory, just 10 days after announcing the offer.
What Happened: On Sept. 15, Tesla added factory tours to its referral program, allowing users with 15,000 referral credits to exchange them for a walking tour of either Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, or its Fremont Factory in California, as stated in the company’s app.
However, the tours have now been removed.
Enthusiasts on Twitter noted the swift removal and speculated it was due to an overwhelming number of reservations.
One user humorously likened Tesla’s factories to “Willy Wonka’s factory,” alluding to the film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” where children anticipated golden tickets inside chocolate bars for a factory tour.
Why It Matters: Tesla users can accrue referral credits by having friends or family use their referral link to purchase a Tesla product for the first time or even take a demo drive of a Tesla.
Tesla rewards active participants in its referral program with various incentives. Last month, the company offered customers the opportunity to redeem 30,000 credits for an invitation to its Cybertruck delivery event, scheduled for later this year.
