Meta's Threads Faces Uphill Battle In Rivalry With Elon Musk's X, Remains Ahead Of Only Tumblr

Meta Platforms Inc META real-time messaging app Threads is witnessing slower growth, as it faces tough competition with Elon Musk’s X, reported CNBC.

The app had a strong debut in July but has since slid down the ranks of popular social media platforms, according to a forecast by Insider Intelligence. It is expected to have 23.7 million U.S. users in 2023, far behind Meta’s other platforms, Facebook and Instagram, and ByteDance‘s TikTok, and Musk’s X.

Insider Intelligence predicts Threads will remain second-to-last in the U.S. social network rankings through 2025. Meanwhile, app analytics firms like Sensor Tower and Similarweb have reported declining usage of Threads.

Despite initial success due to easy sign-ups for existing Instagram users and being an alternative to Twitter, Threads has struggled to maintain its growth.

“Threads received an initial boost from Twitter’s missteps, but it can’t rely on X defectors to continue to grow,” said Jasmine Enberg, principal analyst at Insider Intelligence.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that the company has no immediate plans to monetize Threads until it is more established. The company has been working on enhancing Threads with new features like a desktop version and a search tool.

Enberg emphasized that Threads must establish a unique identity to become a significant player in the social media market, much like TikTok did with its unique user experience.
