Gavin Newsom Slams Second GOP Primary Debate: 'What A Clown Show'

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the second Republican primary debate in an X post on Wednesday.

What Happened: Newsom took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote, “What a clown show.”

The post was shared in the aftermath of the second GOP primary debate, which was marked by the absence of former President Donald Trump.

Why It Matters: The second Republican primary debate held on Wednesday was broadcasted on Fox Business. The second primary debate took place on Wednesday night at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. Seven Republican presidential hopefuls, all trailing behind Trump in the polls, met the Republican National Committee (RNC) criteria to participate in the debate.

These included DeSantis, conservative businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.

Trump opted out of the debate for the second time, a decision that sparked criticism and jibes from his fellow GOP candidates. Former New Jersey Governor Christie and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took the opportunity to lambast Trump for his absence.

Trump’s campaign, in response to the criticism, called on the Republican National Committee to halt the “boring” GOP debates. They urged that the focus should be on attacking Joe Biden, rather than on intra-party squabbles.
