EV giant Tesla Inc TSLA has started rolling out an over-the-air update aimed at raising the safety of the car.
What Happened: With the new update, the vehicle’s hazard lights will auto-activate and start blinking rapidly to enhance visibility if an airbag is deployed, hinting that a collision has occurred.
“Your car just got better while you slept,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote about the update.
The update is, however, limited to vehicles in the U.S. starting from model year 2020. It includes the lower-end Model 3 and Y vehicles and the more premium Model S and X.
Why It Matters: Musk has previously claimed Tesla to be the safest car on the road. "Statistics speak for themselves. This is not a matter of opinion," he said in an interview in May.
Despite allegations to the contrary, Tesla has also asserted that its vehicles equipped with Autopilot and Full Self-Driving are much safer than the overall U.S. vehicle fleet.
Autopilot-engaged Tesla vehicles crashed only 0.18 times per million miles in 2022 as compared to the general U.S. fleet which witnessed 1.53 accidents within the same distance, Tesla said in its impact report in April.
