A Ukrainian intelligence agency claims to have intercepted a call where a Russian soldier admits his unit staged combat videos to embellish their frontline performance. The audio of the call was released by Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate on Wednesday.
According to a Business Insider report, the soldier in the call informs his wife about the severe injuries and casualties within his unit, stating that they were unable to retrieve the bodies of the fallen. The authenticity of the call and the identity of the soldier’s unit remain unconfirmed.
In the shared audio, the soldier refutes his wife’s claim of Russian troops’ successful advance through a Ukrainian village, seen in a video. He clarifies that the footage was falsified to depict progress by the Russian forces.
The soldier also revealed he was ordered by his commander to create a video similar to “The 9th Company,” a 2005 Russian war film. According to him, the footage was sent to their superiors.
This is not the first instance of Ukraine intercepting calls from Russian soldiers. Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has been claiming to intercept multiple calls, revealing the soldiers’ frustration and complaints about heavy losses and poor equipment.
